Day 1 (Half Day): A Vertical Introduction to the Mountain City

Chongqing’s dramatic elevation is something you have to see to believe.

  • Daijia Lane (戴家巷) - 1 hour: A trendy neighborhood perched on a cliffside, blending old residential charm with modern cafes and hotpot restaurants. Head towards Daijia Lane Cliffside Boardwalk (戴家巷崖壁步道). Here, you can enjoy views of the Jialing River and the bustling city streets below.

    8-10 min walk by foot

  • Kuixing Pavilion (魁星楼) - 20 minutes: This is an architecture that demonstrates Chongqing’s 3D layout. Walk toward the riverside to find the crossing bridge; it’s a surprise to realize you are standing on the deceptive ground floor, which is also the 22nd floor of another building. To find the "real" ground floor, head toward the Gaosheng Chuangfu Center (高盛创富中心) and take the lift down. From here, you can walk along the river and see the iconic Hongya Cave from across.

    8-10 min walk by foot

  • Hongya Cave (洪崖洞民俗风貌区) - 20 minutes: This stilt-house complex glows brilliantly at night from 7pm onwards. Be prepared to navigate a sea of local photographers eager to offer their services. I did not spend much time inside the complex itself. Instead, I took the lift back to the top floor to find dinner nearby.

Option 1 (Metro): 10 min walk to Xiaoshizi (小什字) station, 5 min ride to Grand Theatre (大剧院) station, followed by a 10 min walk to the park.

Option 2 (Walking - Recommended): 30-40 min walk by foot to get across the bridge

  • Jiangbeizui Riverfront Park (江北嘴江滩公园) - 1 hour: Located directly across the river, this park offers a stunning, panoramic view of Hongya Cave and the glowing Yuzhong skyline—the perfect end to the first day.

Day 2: A Day Along the Monorail

Chongqing’s Monorail Line 2 is more than just transport—it is a scenic journey built directly along the curves of the Jialing river.

  • Zengjiayan Cliffside Path (曾家岩临崖步道) - 1 hour: Starting from Qiujing Middle School (求精中学), take a leisurely stroll back toward the station. This easy-access pathway offers a fantastic vantage point to watch the monorail glide along the edge of the Jialing River.

5-10 min walk to 曾家岩 station, 5 min ride to 李子坝 station

  • Liziba Monorail Station (李子坝单轨穿楼观景平台) - 30 minutes: The world-famous spot where the train passes directly through the middle of a building. You’ll likely see crowds of people perfectly timed to snap the classic "eating the train" photo. It’s touristy, but seeing the engineering in person is a must.

20 min by foot to Fotuguan Park North Gate 重庆佛图关公园(北门)

  • Eling Trestle Bridge (鹅岭栈桥) - 1 hour: Located inside Eling Park (鹅岭公园), this serene ridge walk takes about 15 minutes and offers a stunning, elevated perspective of the Jialing river. Since the walk is one-way, take your time to soak in the panoramic views.

Pro-tip: If you hold an international passport or a Hong Kong Home-Return Permit (回乡证), you can simply register at the visitor’s center next to the entrance. Chinese residents will need to make a reservation in advance via the WeChat mini-program.

    10-15 min by foot

  • TESTBED 2 (鹅岭二厂) - 1 hour: A former printing factory that has been reimagined as a hip creative park. It’s full of industrial charm and souvenir shops. I recommend finding a seat at one of the coffee shops perched at the park's edge—it's the perfect spot to rest and watch the city move.

    10 min by Didi (car)

  • Lansheng Pavilion (揽胜亭) - 30 minutes: Head up to this pavilion for a bird’s-eye view of the Liziba station from above. It is a fantastic spot for sunset, offering a sweeping look at the city as the lights begin to flicker on across the mountain.

15 min walk to Niujiaotuo (牛角沱) station, get off at Guanyinqiao (观音桥)

  • Guanyinqiao Pedestrian Street (观音桥步行街): End your day in this bustling shopping district. It is the perfect place to grab dinner and immerse yourself in the local energy of Chongqing’s nightlife.

Day 3: A Walk into the Heart of the Mountain City

Beyond the tourist landmarks lie the real "rhythms" of Chongqing.

  • Linhua Residential Area (临华路小区) - 1 hour: Start from Qixinggang (七星岗) Station and navigate toward Building 22 (22号楼). This is another demonstration of the mountain city’s surreal layout; you’ll find yourself standing on a "ground floor" street, only to look down and discover playgrounds and entire apartment blocks nestled deep underneath you.

10 min walk to Zhangjia Garden (张家花园) to continue the walk uphill

  • Zaozilan Ya Colored Steps (枣子岚垭彩色步道) - 1 hour: These vibrant, mosaic-tiled stairs make for a wonderful photo op. The citywalk ends at the Children’s Palace Slide (少年宫梭梭板)—a long slide located near the historic Yang Sen Mansion (杨森公馆旧址).

    20 min by Didi (car)

  • Houbao Park (后堡公园) - 1 hour: This small park offers a lovely river view and a glimpse into local life. Watch the residents enjoy a leisurely afternoon at the table tennis courts before finding a trendy cafe to rest your legs. It’s a quiet, breezy spot to sit back and watch the city’s pace soften.

40 min - 5 min walk to 后堡 station, take the train to 上新街

  • Longmenhao Old Street (龙门浩老街) & Xiahaoli (下浩里) - 2-3 hours: Both areas are beautifully restored heritage sites along the riverside. The two are connected at the ground floor of the riverside. If time is limited, you could skip the former - Expect to find bookstores, boutique hotels, restaurants and cafes scattered among the stone-paved stairs.

Pro-tip 1: Time your arrival at Xiahaoli about 1–2 hours before sunset. This gives you plenty of time to wander before the boutique shops begin to close for the evening. Make your way toward Haoyue Bookstore (浩阅书店) to find the observatory deck—it offers a stunning view of the heritage landscape and its waterfall.

Pro-tip 2: If you’re visiting on a weekend, head to the riverfront for dinner to catch the weekend drone show. We found an incredible outdoor hotpot restaurant just 5 minutes away by car - grab a Didi from near the Mishi Lijing Hotel (米市丽景酒店), located close to the observatory point.

Afterward, head back into Xiahaoli for a late-night stroll. As the crowds thin out and the lanterns glow, the neighborhood takes on a completely different, magical atmosphere that feels worlds away from the daytime bustle.

Day 4 (Half Day)

On my final morning, I took a more spontaneous approach.

  • Shancheng Mountain City Boardwalk (山城步道) - 2 hours: Start near the Jiashi Nursing Home (佳实养老院) and begin your descent. This is one of the city's most iconic sightseeing routes. In some ways, it reminds me of a smaller, more intimate version of Xiahaoli, with local shops tucked into the hillside. Keep an eye out for the historic Ren’ai Hall (仁爱堂) and a quiet, no-longer-in-use primary school that adds a touch of nostalgia to the walk.

  • The Ring Shopping Park (光环购物公园): I spent my final afternoon in this shopping mall for massage and food, but the real draw is the indoor greenhouse garden. Many people call it the "Changi of Chongqing" thanks to its Avatar-inspired aesthetic. While it’s fairly small, the lush greenery inside a shopping mall is still a fascinating sight.

Note: Admission to the garden is free, but you will need to register on-site via their WeChat mini-program to receive a QR code for entry.
